At around twice the thickness of most Blu-ray machines at 124mm high the new Pioneer BDP-LX71 is a heavy duty machine with a heavy duty price tag. As usual with all audio video equipment from Pioneer its slots together very nicely with the appearance of other equipment from the manufacturer.

The BDP-LX71 work on s with a socket for Ethernet ideal for Internet downloading of audio and video content, although this is clearly a option is has yet to prove itself in the real world marketplace.

You will find good quality optical digital and coaxial audio outputs that are not a particularly good marriage as it is not capable of carrying high-definition audio signals. A surprising choice for a machine that carries a higher than average price.

It's a pleasant looking device, and it is lack of slim appearance does not take away from its good looks. Pioneer has seen fit to include analogue 7.1 audio outputs. This enables connection between an AV receiver and the Blu-ray, very helpful if you prefer that system over audio making use of HDMI.

The remote is nothing special, being in the usual long Pioneer fashion, everything is well marked and clear making for very easy use and it does have a good weighty feel in the hand. This is a good solid player worthy of inspection at the high end price does not seem to be justified with inappropriate and missing features.
